Halloween
1–31 October
An omen in Europe and a blessing in China, where the word for bat sounds like the word for fortune. It depends entirely on who is doing the looking.
The oldest costume there is: a sheet, two holes, and the entire idea of a visitor who has not quite left. Hung at Halloween, when the door is said to be ajar.

Diwali
Moves with the lunar calendar — editable in the app

Paper and silk over a frame, hung in strings at Diwali and at the lunar new year. Light you can carry, and light that says the house is keeping the festival.

Christmas
1–26 December
No two alike, and none lasting — which is most of why they are worn. A six-armed crystal of ice, the shape water takes when it freezes slowly enough to be careful about it.
A shepherd's crook in boiled sugar, hung on trees since the nineteenth century. The red stripe came later, and nobody is quite sure who added it.
Hung on doors and harnesses through midwinter, when a bell was how you found the way home in weather that hid the road. Brass, so it carries.
New Year
27 December – 6 January
Invented to frighten off what the new year might otherwise bring, and kept for a thousand years after anyone believed that, because it turned out to be a good way to begin.
A round coin with a square hole, strung on red cord: heaven round, earth square, and the year ahead threaded through the middle of both.
How the seasons work
A pack dresses the rope on the first day of its window. What was hanging there is written into settings first and put back when the season ends, so nothing you chose is lost — and because it is stored rather than held in memory, it survives a restart.
It also gives way. If a season is running and you pick something else, the rope stops being dressed as that pack: nothing will be placed over your choice later, and nothing will be taken away again that year. Changing what somebody chose is a liberty; changing it back is what turns it into a decoration rather than a nuisance.
Christmas ends on Boxing Day and New Year starts the next morning, so no day is claimed twice. Diwali is the exception to fixed dates — it follows the lunar calendar and moves by weeks from year to year, so the app carries an approximate window and lets you correct it rather than pretending a fixed date is right.
